This list does not pretend to be complete and be used as a selection guide. It is here to help users, through Web navigation, to get a survey on main Datacom Web contributors.
Also the information is listed by alphabetical order and therefore doesn't imply any kind of ranking.

• WIDE AREA NETWORK MANUFACTURERS

  Datacom WAN products are classified by their role in an Enterprise WAN network:

  • Transmission, Network adaptation : " Transmission Units"
    

  • multiprotocol /multimedia network access : "Remote Access Device"
    
  • Concentration of permanent/switched remote accesses: "Access Concentrators"
    
  • Interconnection of the regional access networks : "Backbone nodes"
    
  • Integration of different enterprise networks ( X25, IP,SNA, voice, video): "Multimedia nodes"

  Of course, the separation between some of the manufacturing products is somewhat fuzzy,for instance: a remote access concentrator and an edge switch feeding the backbone can be merged in the same product. The same occurs with the data backbone nodes integrating all the Enterprise traffics.

• LAN MANUFACTURERS

  Are only considered here products to build enterprise LANs (inside a company or a campus site). They are classified into:

  • NICs : Network interface cards plug into workstations or servers
    

  • HUBs and Switches that connect the users/hosts in a LAN configuration (either shared or switched)
    
  • ROUTERS that separate and interconnect different LANs' (subnets, logical LAN,..) in the Enterprise.

  The product segmentation has also some fuzzy overlaps with the recent "switching routers" or "routing switches" or "multi layer switches" (depending on what main feature is stressed) products.
